Kadyn Thomas Duvall

This post is only eight weeks overdue, but since our sweet boy made his appearance in March, life has been a little crazy as is expected with a newborn. I haven't written a blog post since my 28 week bump-update back in January, so let me backtrack a little... Towards the end of my pregnancy we discovered that I had pre-eclampsia and were told that we would have to have an early delivery, but at that point we weren't sure how early. Other than being super uncomfortable and having some pretty major swelling during the last few weeks of pregnancy, I really enjoyed being pregnant. I had a very easy pregnancy and felt great up until the very end.

When I went in for my 35 week appointment my doctor decided to go ahead and schedule an induction for 37 weeks just to be safe since pre-eclampsia gets worse as time goes on.
Kadyn Thomas Duvall made his appearance three weeks early, on March 25, 2019 and our lives have forever been changed for the better.
Our sweet boy weighed in at 6lbs 4oz and was 19 inches long.

Due to being three weeks early, our sweet boy had some respiratory issues and had to spend his first few days in the NICU.  He had some of the best nurses and I'll forever be thankful for all of the sweet nurses that took care of our sweet baby. Although he was only in the NICU for four days, those four days were some of the slowest days of my life. Seeing your baby have to go through so much is HARD. I have so much respect for parents whose babies have to spend weeks or months in the NICU, I can't even imagine how hard that would be.

We got to come home on March 29th, and I'll never forget the feeling of relief I felt when they called us to say we could go home. I couldn't stop crying because I was just so happy/thankful.

Our first few weeks were filled with doctors appointments for our boy to make sure he was gaining weight and growing as he should be.

Breastfeeding was a struggle and so much harder than I imagined in the beginning. Since he was early it took him a little longer to learn how to latch. We met with several lactation consultants while he was in the NICU and then one more time once we came home. I knew that I had a good supply, but felt like he wasn't getting enough when he would nurse so I would nurse him for a bit and then pump and give him more in a bottle. When he was around 3 weeks old we discovered that he had a tongue tie that was affecting his latch as well. He is doing amazing now and I'm so thankful that I stuck with it and didn't give up.

He has also been an extremely colicky baby. It started when he was around three weeks old and I feel like it is slowly getting better. He has gone from crying all day everyday to just crying for an hour or two at night. As a mama it's so hard when there is nothing you can do to console your crying baby.

Since coming home almost eight weeks ago, Kadyn has grown and changed so much. He does something new everyday and its so fun/bittersweet to watch him grow. We love our sweet boy more than I could have ever thought possible and are SO thankful for a healthy baby boy.
